AIM serves in the country of Cambodia. Cambodia was ravaged by the Khmer Rouge and its leader, Pol Pot, from 1975 to 1979. Mass genocide resulted; the educated, religious and influential were killed, with an estimated total of 3 million deaths. Much of Cambodia lives with post-traumatic stress disorder and in abject poverty. Based on a 2012 report published by the United Nations Development Program, one third of Cambodians live below the international poverty line by earning just $0.61 per day. This along with corruption in government and police agencies fuels the sex-trafficking industry.
